Chapter 13

Luther

I swallow, my throat growing dry. Deimos lies in bed where the magic keeps him alive, but for how long? His time is ticking and we’re still waiting for the damn message from the king’s contact in the Ash Court.

I’m losing my grip because my brother has one week and we’ve already lost three days. If we don’t get a response today, Ahren and I will depart for Ash Court tonight. I’ll tear down the entire Unseelie palace if I need to, to find a cure for Deimos.

He’s so pale. All I want is to hear his voice and for him to tell his stupid jokes. I swear if he survives this, I’ll laugh at every one of them.

Worry strangles me. What if we’re too late? What if…? Fuck. Deimos can’t die, I can’t lose him. Barbed emotions drag through me, cresting easily, and too many things come at me, overwhelming me.

I clench my hands and grit my teeth, lost in my thoughts, staring down at the floor, when the door behind me creaks open.

“Luther, there you are,” my stepfather says with impatience in his voice.

I don’t turn to face him as his footsteps close in. He joins me, staring down at Deimos, saying nothing at first.

“The bird carrier just arrived from the Ash Court,” he states abruptly.

With the realization of what he implies, I glance at him, locking my gaze on his face. He’s not smiling but not frowning either. I bristle on the inside, wishing that maybe for once he could just show some fucking emotions.

“What did it say?” I ask, rapidly.

He lifts a rolled-up piece of parchment in his hand and opens it to reveal a few words, which he reads aloud. “East entrance to servant quarters.”

“That’s all? You sure this isn’t a setup?” I ask. The king’s delivered letter could have been intercepted by anyone at the Ash Court.

“It’s Relle’s signature, and the location is where we always used to meet. She is most likely expecting me, as I only sent her one word, which was our code for when I had to see her urgently.”

I nod, processing everything he’s telling me, though I have so many questions. Questions we’ve been told never to ask him, to always let a king keep his secrets. But if we’re going to risk our lives, I want to understand the relationship he has with those in the Ash Court. “I don’t understand why you used to visit the Ash Court when they would kill you if the Unseelie found out?”

He snorts, completely frustrated with my question. “Concentrate on the mission. My friend Relle is helpful, and you will need to give her this.” He sticks his hand into the pocket of his gold and purple surcoat and pulls out a diamond-studded bracelet.

I frown when I look up at him, my eyes narrowing.

“She’s not my lover. Fuck, Luther, focus! I’ve always gifted her jewels to help her provide for her family, and this will also let her know you are with me.
